The Endless Round

by Ruby Bayan - 12/31/03

'Colored Pencil Shavings' by Ruby BayanAnother calendar year comes to an end as the world welcomes another new one. Strangely, I am reminded of Elton John's song in the movie The Lion King: "The Circle of Life" (Thank you, Mr. John and Mr. Rice, for letting me quote your masterpiece here):

The Circle of Life
Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Tim Rice
From the soundtrack of "The Lion King"

From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There's more to be seen than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done

Some say eat or be eaten
Some say live and let live
But all are agreed as they join the stampede
You should never take more than you give

In the circle of life
It's the wheel of fortune
It's the leap of faith
It's the band of hope
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle, the circle of life

Some of us fall by the wayside
And some of us soar to the stars
And some of us sail through our troubles
And some have to live with the scars

There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

I am particularly moved by the second stanza: "Some say eat or be eaten, some say live and let live; but all are agreed as they join the stampede, you should never take more than you give."

The laws of nature say that every creature's role in the grand scheme of things is to take as well as give. Each of us is predator as well as prey. As a vital link in the food chain, we are allowed to acquire what we need to survive, but we are also required to provide what others need to live. Life's basic rule is that simple.

Unfortunately, some of us are lured to excesses and extremes. We want to have more than the next person, oftentimes killing one another in the process. We want to be bigger than our neighbors, oftentimes depriving others of their means to survive. We take more than we give. This is how we disrupt the natural flow of existence. This is how we bring about evil, pain, and suffering. And this is why...

"Some of us fall by the wayside
And some of us soar to the stars
And some of us sail through our troubles
And some have to live with the scars"
As the song continues, it describes life as a wheel of fortune, a leap of faith, and a band of hope... until we find our place on the path that unwinds... in the endless round.

Another ending, another beginning, yet nothing will be the same. The next twelve months will bring a new string of fortunes and misfortunes, new opportunities to take countless leaps of faith, and renewed hope in our struggle to build a more meaningful, more prosperous life for us all.

Let's welcome the New Year by celebrating the circle... and miracle of life!

Cheers!
